Aaron Sparks Forrest and Fort Pillow Capstone

So since I have to graduate school at some point I'm taking the final requirement for my history degree which is a capstone. The capstone involves a 25-30 pg paper on some aspect of Civil War Memory. At first I was going to write my paper on Civil War reenacting and the role it plays in how people remember the Civil War. However, I decided to look at something a little more controversial and changed my topic to how General Forrest is remembered for the role that he did or did not play in the mas… Continue

Aaron Sparks Maneuvers

We all know that all some of us in the hobby forget how to do certain maneuvers during reenactments. I was surfing the net today and came across something that might be of some interest to those who cannot remember how to form company into line or cannot remember how to right face or left face in regards to where the one and the two go. This might be helpful and actually shows the maneuvers. You can rewind and pause and they even mark each man a one and a two. I just hope everyone can count that… Continue

Chris High Res Images

This link is from an email thread that I am on and thought it would be good to share with the group. Here is a resource of some extremely high res images from the Chicago Historical Society. Zoom in for as much detail as you like. http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/10434.html Here is another close detail shot of Confederates at the Washington Monument, Richmond - 1865.

Sean Pridgeon Bad Idea Becomes Reality

When the battalion was first formed my Dad and I mailed out a joke to all the battalion members one Christmas. It was a top ten list (inspired by David Lettermen) of Civil War “Christmas gifts that never made it”. As we mailed it from a post office in Virginia and we never signed it, for several years folks tried to figure out who sent it. The list included: The John Brown Action Gallows The Sultana Lego Playset The Preston Brooks Action Coin Bank The Fort Pillow Playset The Vicksburg Cookb… Continue

Dave Pridgeon The General

This picture was a familiar sight to members of this battalion as they stood in formation for a number of years. The officer on horseback is General Don Patterson. I am eagerly looking up at him, seeking instructions. The date is April, 1995, the event the 130th Anniversary of Sailor’s Creek. It was Don’s last Sailor’s Creek.

Don Patterson was to many of us our “reenacting father”. As the head of the First Brigade, A.N.V., Don took this battalion under his wing and did whatever he coul

Dave Pridgeon THE MARCH OF A LIFETIME!

The mounted photo of me that I just posted was taken as we started to assemble for the “March” to Marsh Creek at the 125th Anniversary event of the battle of Gettysburg. This spectacle of over 5,000 Confederates on the road was something every participant will never forget. It would be one of the most remarkable moments I have experienced in reenacting, and don’t know if anything like it can be recreated anytime soon.

Over the winter of 1987-88’, I was heavily involved in planning

Bob Denton Battle Reenactments as "Performance Art"

There is an old maxim in reenacting that says, "Battle reenactment scenarios never go as planned; five minutes into it and the script goes 'out the window', that's why they suck." This is an interesting (if misbegotten) notion. The underlying premise behind it basically assumes that Civil War reenactments, specifically the battle scenario, is somehow "different" from any other form of performance art. Yet I beg to differ. What we do has all the signifying characters of any performance:… Continue

Chris Technology and Re-enacting

I stumbled upon Ning today and think I might have found the technical solution to bring an organization together virtually. Over the years I have seen groups disband because only a few key members in a group maintain the communication needed to keep members interested and the org relevant.

An organization like the PSL is made up of different sub organizations and in turn made up by those members. The challenge here is finding a suitable way to empower… Continue
