July 24 – 26, 2009 in Bartow, WV

For Reenactors:
Useful Info:

Location:
The original battlefield site located on the crest of Allegheny Mountain (elevation 4,400’) near the VA/WV line, approximately ½-hour west of McDowell, VA.

Event Organizers:
Pridgeon's Shenandoah Legion, The Highland Historical Society and the Highland County Chamber of Commerce

Featuring:

  • Marching on a nearly pristine stretch of the historic Staunton-Parkersburg Pike
  • Lack of modern intrusions
  • A “moving” event, with different camp locations
  • Friday and Saturday nights
  • Activities and camps on original ground, including Camp Allegheny, the site of some of the best-preserved fortifications of the Civil War.

Setting:
It’s late 1861, and the Staunton-Parkersburg Pike connects the Federalist-leaning areas of western Virginia with the strategic and fertile Shenandoah Valley. One of the bastions created to prevent a full-scale Federal incursion into the valley is Camp Allegheny (Fort Johnson), which lies astride the Pike at the crest of Allegheny Mountain. We will recreate a portion of General R. H. Milroy’s attempt to take the fort, which was successfully resisted by the Confederate Forces of General Edward “Allegheny” Johnson.
